How To Begin A Murder Mystery Book

If you love murder mysteries then yes, you have found your calling! My blog is all about comic books, other stuff, but MOST importantly murder mysteries. And why shouldn’t it be? The world should appreciate this humble genre much more than it does, if you ask me. Everyone knows – or should – that without the invention of the murder mystery, many film genres would have fallen flat on their face at the first dramatic hurdle.

Step 1: an original idea. No candlestick’s, no dodgy looking waiters, unless there’s something unique and inventive about it, please. There are SO many different aspects you can use in a murder mystery, so get creative and come up with something cutting edge!

Step 2: start off with a bang. I always try and start my novels with a bang. It doesn’t have to be a death, although that helps, it could just be something utterly expected like a chemical attack or a plane crash or something.

Step 3: don’t get bogged down in character. Reading about how Suzanne the maid had brown hair, slightly olive skin and every copy of Marian Keye’s books is about as exciting as sitting through three hours of online recruitment software presentation. Start with a bang, keep things moving at a good pace and let the reader get to know the characters as he or she goes. That’s a much better recipe for success if you ask me.

Step 4: smells matter. Make the reader feel the atmosphere. Smell is a much under-rated thing and helps you feel instantly in the place of a character!
