Cutting Edge

I’ve written a few posts on why the murder mystery genre is overlooked, but if I am not mistaken I have NEVER written one about how to write a cutting-edge murder mystery. I thought I should probably do that. I wouldn’t want to disappoint my thousands of avid followers now, would I?

1) Be original: the whole point of being cutting-edge is NOT thinking of old things and taking ideas from them. Sure, you can use old murder mystery TV and novels for inspiration, but in order to come up with something entirely new and non-derivative, you need to think outside the box – look at different influences, that kind of thing. One way of doing this is to cross murder mystery with another genre, like comedy for example.

2) Plot from the end and make sure your idea is NOTHING like any other: this is going to be tricky, and will take some time. It’s not going to happen overnight, and there may be a few false-starts. Expect nothing less than hard work. To be cutting-edge you could have a murder mystery start off in a zooand end at botox essex or something. The key is to be obscure, but have reasons for being obscure. That way you’ll look very smart and will probably become the next millionaire murder mystery writer!

3) It doesn’t have to be just adults: why not a murder mystery book about children? Or why not one about zombies suddenly becoming aware they are zombies? There are loads of opportunities to be different, the trick is to do your research, know what’s out there and have a distinct voice. In other words, you need to make the reader stop in their tracks and not be able to put that book down afterwards!
