How Writing Murder Mysteries Helps Skill-Build
Sadly, most people know more about how DNA Tests work than how to write a murder mystery. It’s a tragic world we live in when very few people watch murder mysteries on TV, let alone bother to take it upon themselves to write them themselves.
Which is why I am doing just that; my aim? To revolutionise murder mystery writing, of course. I’ll be like that Che Guevara character – if that’s the right spelling – and after my stuff is accepted by publishers, things in the stale world of murder mystery will change, for good!
In my humble opinion, more people should write. Here are a few skills I have learned and developed since I started my amateur murder mystery career.
-
Patience: now I have very nearly got to the end of a book – just once mind you – I know patience like, quite literally, the back of my hand. After you’ve written loads and got through the frustration of working out who should murder who and with what weapon, you can do pretty much anything, and I do mean ANYTHING.
-
Idea making: idea making is crucial in all walks of life, but it’s especially essential when trying to be the next Stephen King. By writing more, especially mysteries, you are forced to come up with ideas like there is no tomorrow, often when you are so annoyed and depressed with your writing that it honestly does feel like there will indeed be no tomorrow.
-
Romance: every murder mystery needs a bit of flirtatious action and romance. By creating it, you learn how to be more romantic. Not cheesy, but in a classy sort of a way. So in all, you really can’t lose by trying your hand at murder mystery writing.
