What We Can Learn From Famous TV Detectives

As you will know if you are a regular reader of this blog, I am a big murder mystery fan. Oh yes indeed, I just can’t get enough of that stuff. I love Diagnosis Murder, have a soft spot for Columbo (and yes, that’s the correct spelling right there; amateurs might call him Colombo but that would, in fact, be wrong), and will sit through just about any TV programme or film – even if considered substandard turgid nonsense rubbish, it has to be said – if it has any promise of even the smallest amount of murder mystery action. Here is what I have learnt from murder mystery characters, as they have a lot to give and if we all paid more attention then the world would surely be a much better place:
Columbo: I love this detective. Why? Because he seems so unassuming, of course. You just can never really tell what he’s thinking…even when you’ve studied loads of episodes. Also, Columbo teaches you that you don’t need to boast about your capabilities, not ever. His way of doing things is to hide them just below the surface and surprise his enemies with his wit and intelligent way of going about solving complex problems.
Diagnosis Murder’s Dick Van Dyke: everyone loves Dick Van Dyke, don’t they? I love this show for a whole host of reasons; one of the biggest ones being that in DM, even the smallest inconsequential thing can quickly become something seriously harrowing. For example, some chinzy Nao ornament can become a murder weapon, and a pick axe can turn out to be a harmless ornament after all! What can we learn from this? I would have thought it would be obvious: life is sometimes not everything it would appear to be. Thanks Dick!
